Ethan Hawke Tells The Truth

Early in his career, Ethan Hawke created a lot of envy: he was cool, he had Uma, he got his novels published by the best houses. After Uma, as he explains in this new interview, he had a few dark years, holed up in the Chelsea Hotel. In a very real way, theater pulled him out of that slump, and I was fortunate enough to be around backstage during one of those plays, “The Coast of Utopia.” And I can you this: Ethan is the exact opposite of that early, inaccurate image of the pampered boy. He’s smart. He’s funny. Best of all, he’s self-deprecating. For that, I can forgive almost anything.
