HBO Will Adapt Diamond’s “Stick Fly”

Although I had mixed feelings about Lydia Diamond‘s play “Stick Fly” when it ran on Broadway last season, starring Mekhi Phifer and Tracie Thoms (pictured) I’m pleased that HBO is adapting the drama into an hour-long format. I suspect that such a shape will allow for the development of the characters — upper-middle-class African-Americans on Martha’s Vineyard — in a more satisfying way than onstage. And must it be said — it must! it must! — that series about successful people of color are still too rare on premium cable for anybody to be sniffy about them.
