“On The Town”: My FT Review
The Financial Times has published my review of the Broadway revival of “On The Town,” the 1944 musical about three sailors on leave. Bottom line: ‘”During the war, New York was all about sex and booze,†the playwright Arthur Laurents once said. Even though the 1944 musical “On the Town,” now in joyous, amusing revival on Broadway, was created not by Laurents but in part by two of his future collaborators, the composer Leonard Bernstein and the director Jerome Robbins, Laurents’ remark could be chiselled above the proscenium of the Lyric Theatre. In this cavernous space, which has defeated all recent occupants (including the “Spider-Man” musical), sailors on shore leave have never seemed so deliriously horny.’
