Your Weekend: LW Recommends

Television: Like you, I’ll be taping or continuing with various miniseries: “The Killing” on AMC, “The Borgias” on Showtime, “Mildred Pierce” on HBO. I’ll also be dropping in all day Sunday on TCM’s tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. Movies: I enjoy a good train wreck, and the new stoner comedy “Your Highness,” starring James Franco and Natalie Portman, seems to qualify. (Good thing it didn’t come out before the Oscars.) Books: I plan to finish Manning Marable’s new biography, “Malcolm X: A Life Of Reinvention.” The news reports have focused on Marable’s revelation of Malcolm’s “gay affair” (it was actually part of his overall hustling as a young man: hardly filled with love), but the excitement of the book is more in what is unearthed about Malcolm’s FBI and NYPD files. Sports: I’ll be glued to the finish of The Masters on CBS, hoping that this young phenom may finish Tigerishly. Music: Be sure to listen to the Metropolitan Opera’s broadcast of Rossini’s “Le Comte Ory,” a new production that I enjoyed when I saw it last week and whose music is delightful. Not To Be Missed: the first episode of the sequel to “Upstairs Downstairs.”
