“Fences” Is All About Denzel
This brilliant August Wilson play stars Denzel. We’ve been hearing a lot about Viola Davis and this performance’s chances for a Best Actress Oscar. But the trailer is mostly Denzel. Commercially, this makes sense: Denzel’s drawing power just powered a mediocre “The Magnificent Seven” to the top of the box office. Dialing down Viola also makes sense if she’s going to be placed in the Best Supporting Actress category, where she has better odds than in the lead category. Another reason the trailer is mostly Denzel: he directed the movie.
